I actually do go to school...

Many of you have been wondering how my classes have been going, and if I'm even going to school while I'm over here!!!! In fact I am attending classes. I have school four days a week and my schedule is as follows:

Monday:
  • International Marketing: 9:30-12:00
  • Haute Couture: 12:45-2:00
  • Beginning French I: 4:15-5:30
Tuesday:
  • Communications and Global Competence: 9:15-10:30
  • Architecture: 11:15-12:30
Wednesday:
  • Haute Couture: 12:45-2:00
  • Beginning French I: 4:15-5:30
Thursday:
  • Communications and Global Competence: 9:15-10:30
  • Architecture: 11:15-12:30
Now on Thursday's my Architecture class is held on-site somewhere in the city. We get to actually go out and see what we study in the classroom. That is definitely a plus to that class!
I would have to say that my favorite class by far is International Marketing. Most of you know that I'm going to school for my business degree; however, my concentration is in marketing. While I've always enjoyed it I've never been passionate about it, that is until this class. I seriously love everything about this class and the material we are learning. It is all so fascinating and I feel like everything just "clicks" for me. Listening, understanding, participating...it's all so fun and exciting. My professor is such a cool guy and loves to talk and engage us into the information. It makes a 9:30am class on Monday morning worth-while.
My second favorite class is Communications and Global Competence. It's so interesting to learn about various cultures, and how we can learn to communicate with them. How each of us brings our own "cultural baggage" to the table and because of that we have to be careful with what we say and how we act around other people. It's important to realize that we aren't the best country in the world, and that other countries see things differently than we do. I really think this class goes hand-in-hand with my international marketing, and I'm learning valuable tools in each.

For each of my courses I have to write a term-paper that is due at the end of the semester. Each one has to be minimum of about 10 pages. All research based. All various topics. This week I finally nailed down my topics and got them approved by each of my professors! Now it's time to begin working on the tedious task of researching and compiling all my information. My goal is to try and get the majority of the work done (hopefully 2 of my papers done) before fall break, which is at the end of this month. If I can accomplish that then I can have my professors look them over and assess if there is anything I should change, or improve on before I hand it in for my final grade. My topics are as follows:

International Marketing: We have to choose a country, and a product or service which didn't exist in that country and then figure out what it would take to implement that product/service. I of course chose Brandini Toffee, and I decided to do the implementation of our candy in France...more specifically Paris. The reason I chose Paris is because of the demographic and the face that France is known for their food. They are receptive to higher quality products, and will spend money to ensure a nice dessert. There are a few problems that I may run into...the first being the expense to ship it here; however, it would be interesting to research how to sublease, or have someone make our toffee and sell it here. The second problem being that French are very proud of their cuisine. All of their food, even the meat at McDonald's, must be grown in France, it cannot be imported. Lastly, since I've been here I haven't seen ANY toffee or roca products. I was discussing with my professor and he was explaining that not even he knew where to find this type of candy. While the French like desserts they focus more on pastries and tarts, not necessarily hard candies. It will be interesting to research a little bit more and see if eventually one day we will be able to bring Brandini to Paris!

Communications and Global Competence: For this class we had to choose anything that dealt with various countries and how they communicate with one another. I decided to focus on the "green-movement" currently happening within the United States, and really all across the globe and how it's affecting trade between cultures. I chose to compare the US with China. I think I'm going to research the implementations of policies within these two cultures when it comes to adopting new laws dealing with environmental laws, and how/if these policies are affecting the trade between the two countries. Since the US is a low-power distance country, and China is high, it will be interesting to learn what it takes to implement policies. Also, what the long-term/short-term affects will be.

Haute Couture: For this class we had to choose a topic dealing with anything French and Fashion. Now I'm going to be honest, while this class is interesting it's not my favorite, and knowing that I have other projects to do I sort of took the "easy way out". My topic is Coco Chanel and how she revolutionized woman's fashion. I know this has been done millions of times but 1. I find Chanel interesting and a revolutionary 2. I really need something with a lot of research available to me in English 3. I want a topic that will not take me long to complete so I'm not stressing my entire time left in France.

Architecture: I actually really enjoy this class, and when it came to choosing a topic there are just infinite aspects to choose from. The entire city is offered to us and we can go anywhere at anytime and learn vast amounts of information just from one building. When I sat down to try and discover a topic I thought about my reasoning for coming to Paris. Why did I chose this city out of every other city in the world? I remember seeing a picture of the Eiffel tower and thinking it was so beautiful, so crazy the amount of work that went into it. When I first saw it in real life I got choked up. I don't know what it is about this building that makes me so emotional. I always smile when I'm around it, despite the fact that I've seen it now dozens of times. It was built in 1889, one of the most modern additions in Paris. There are thousands of years worth of history roaming these streets, so why choose the tower? I don't know...but I did. I can't wait.

So those are my topics! I know you're all looking forward to reading them when I'm done :) Just kidding!!!!

Ugh, better get started! They are all due in less than 8 weeks!!!

Crazy.
