Seems like a Dream

It seems like decades since I first walked into the study abroad office at my school asking a million questions about various countries and programs. These past 4 months of setting up this foreign exchange have been some of the hardest and most trying times of my life. Between the stress of choosing a country, to figuring out classes that will transfer back to Cal Poly, and not to mention the financial aspect of the entire thing. My-oh-my it’s been one eventful ride, but in just a months time I will be sipping a cappuccino at a café in the middle of one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Paris France.
Initially when considering studying abroad there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to return to Florence. When I visited the city on a day trip back in 2007 I fell in love with the architecture, history, art, etc. I wanted to see more, explore the alleys and see the museums. When I asked my mom she suggested broadening my horizons and exploring a new city. While the initial thought was exciting I started to become nervous about what lay ahead.
Sure Paris is one of the most visited cities in the world, especially by Americans, but we also know that the French are very patriotic and aren’t so fond of us stuck up Yankees (completely understandable). I’m nervous because I DO NOT speak French, at all. I’ve never attempted to speak the language aside from Michelle by the Beatles. I’m also nervous because I have never been to France, and don’t know how to navigate my way around the city nor have I ever had to use a public transit system to find my way around! So many obstacles that must be overcome, but I believe I will be able to persevere.
While this whole experience is completely new and exciting and I truly believe that it’s going to change my entire outlook on life. Being away from the states, being able to examine not only the world but also myself, and the type of person that I want to become. I couldn’t have done it without all the help and support of my family and friends, and can’t wait to share my experiences and memories with everyone.
